Michael Fitzgerald Assistant Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School
Education B.Sc., Central Missouri State U.; Ph.D., Institute of Molecular Virology, St. Louis Univ, Missouri

Dr. Fitzgerald graduated from Central Missouri State University and obtained his Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Saint Louis University. He did his postdoctoral studies at the Harvard School of Public Health in the Cardiovascular Laboratory of Dr. Edgar Haber under the mentorship of Dr. Guy L. Reed. In 1999 he joined Dr. Freeman's Lipid Metabolism Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Fitzgerald has now become an independent investigator, having been awarded an RO1 grant from the NHLBI. The focus of his research is on the ABCA1 cholesterol efflux transporter and the application of a mass spectrometry approach to define protein-protein interactions that regulate the transporter.

Education B.S., University of Buenos Aires; Ph.D., Boston University
Interests Lipid metabolism regulation

I am interested in understanding how Lipid metabolism is regulated at a molecular and cellular level, and in a whole organism. My current research focuses on the genomic analysis of a families with Dyslipidemia. I also work in designing an assay to conveniently measure the ABCA12 transporter function. Outside the lab, I enjoy skiing, sailing and reading.
